Ransomware Attacks in Transportation

Ransomware attacks have become a severe threat to the transportation industry, disrupting critical systems and infrastructure. In Europe, ransomware incidents targeting the transportation sector rose from 13% of total incidents in 2021 to 25% in 2022. In 2023, ransomware accounted for two-thirds of successful attacks on the transportation sector. Notable victims include Pierce Transit, the Port of Lisbon, and the Romanian Association for International Road Transport, targeted by ransomware tools like LockBit.

These attacks impact traffic management, logistics, and the movement of goods and people, risking passenger safety. Transportation companies are attractive targets due to the sensitive data they store. Beyond financially motivated cybercriminals, the sector has faced attacks from hacktivists and state-backed actors, like the 2023 hacktivist attack on Poland's rail network.

To combat this threat, transportation companies must bolster cybersecurity measures, including strong authentication, secure data storage, and comprehensive response plans. Proactive risk assessments are essential to mitigate ransomware effects.
