Ransomware Attacks in Manufacturing

Ransomware attacks on the manufacturing sector have surged, with 21% of all attacks targeting manufacturing organizations in 2020, continuing into 2021. By 2023, manufacturing became the top industry affected, with an 83% year-over-year increase in victims. In 2023, 56% of manufacturing organizations were hit by ransomware, with attackers encrypting data in 68% of these incidents.

Only 34% of manufacturing organizations chose to pay the ransom, while 73% used backups to restore their systems. The manufacturing sector must prioritize cybersecurity, including enhancing credential security, regularly updating systems, and maintaining comprehensive backup and recovery plans.
