Ransomware Attacks in Construction

The construction industry has become a prime target for ransomware attacks, with the highest number of incidents reported from January 2022 to January 2023. In 2023, the construction industry averaged 226 attacks per year, ranking first among North American industries for ransomware incidents.

These attacks lead to severe consequences, including significant downtime, financial losses, and reputational damage. For instance, a large Canadian construction firm faced a crippling ransomware attack in 2020, exposing sensitive data. Another company with 14 sites and 300 employees suffered 12 days of downtime and encrypted 3 TB of data, ultimately paying the ransom to regain access.

The construction industry must adopt strong cybersecurity measures to mitigate these risks. Strong security protocols, employee training, network segmentation, regular software updates, and secure data backups are essential for safeguarding operations against ransomware.
