Atlantic Dialysis Management Services Ransomware Attack

Atlantic Dialysis Management Services (ADMS), a healthcare services company located in College Point, New York, fell victim to a ransomware attack in August 2022. Orchestrated by the Snatch Team, a notorious ransomware group, the attack led to the exposure of sensitive patient information. The data compromised in this breach included patient names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, medical diagnoses and treatment details, health insurance data, and prescription information.

ADMS oversees a network of dialysis centers throughout New York, such as Astoria Dialysis Center, Broadway Dialysis Center, Central Brooklyn Dialysis Center, Central Park Dialysis Center, and East End Management Services, among others. The organization employs over 227 individuals and reports an annual revenue of approximately $65 million.

The incident at ADMS is indicative of a larger pattern of cyberattacks targeting healthcare providers. In 2021, the U.S. witnessed 321 successful ransomware attacks, impacting over 41 million individuals. Ransomware attacks deploy malicious software to lock an organization out of its systems, allowing attackers to access network files.

In response to the breach, ADMS took immediate action to secure its network, including resetting passwords and hiring a third-party forensic firm for a thorough investigation. Additionally, the company issued data breach notifications to all affected parties.

This event underscores the critical need for healthcare providers to implement comprehensive cybersecurity strategies to safeguard sensitive patient data. Despite the growing threat of ransomware, many organizations remain hesitant to allocate sufficient resources towards preventing such attacks.
